History
About Barclays Hampden
The present Hampden Park opened on 31 October 1903, when Queen’s Park beat Celtic 1–0; it was the club’s third ground of that name. It was the largest stadium in the world until the Maracanã overtook it in 1950, and capacity peaked at about 150,000 between 1927 and 1937. Capacity was cut to 81,000 in 1977 under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act, and a final £59 million redevelopment, funded by the National Lottery, replaced the South Stand and reopened the stadium for the 1999 Scottish Cup Final. The Scottish FA bought the ground from Queen’s Park, taking ownership by August 2020, and in December 2025 sold the naming rights to Barclays.
