History

About Estádio Municipal de Braga

The stadium was built between 2000 and 2003 in a former granite quarry on Monte do Castro, for Euro 2004, and opened on 30 December 2003 with SC Braga against Celta Vigo. It was designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura, and the jury cited it when he won the 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize. It has stands only along the two sides of the pitch, with the quarry's rock face forming the backdrop at one end.

There are only two stands, one along each touchline, with open ends: the rock face at one end and a view over Braga at the other. Seats in the upper tiers are reached by long flights of stairs.
