• Estrela played their first European tie here on 19 September 1990, against Neuchâtel Xamax in the Cup Winners’ Cup, in front of about 6,000.

History

About Estádio José Gomes

Building work began in 1933 and the ground opened in 1957 as the Campo de Jogos João Pimenta, in the Reboleira district of Amadora. After the death in 1989 of João José da Conceição Gomes, who led the club for 23 years and was president for 14 of them, Amadora council and the club renamed it Estádio José Gomes. The original Clube de Futebol Estrela da Amadora was declared insolvent in 2009 and the ground stood largely unused for about six years, which left the north stand structurally damaged. In July 2022 the SAD of the current club, Club Football Estrela da Amadora, bought the complex at auction for about €2.25 million and has since carried out renovation work.
