History
About Estádio José Alvalade
The stadium was built between 2001 and 2003 next to the site of the original José Alvalade stadium, which had opened in 1956 and was demolished in 2003. Designed by Tomás Taveira for Euro 2004, it opened on 6 August 2003 with a 3–1 win over Manchester United. It staged five Euro 2004 matches, including Portugal’s semi-final win over the Netherlands, and the 2005 UEFA Cup final. Works from 2021 removed the moat around the pitch, adding around 2,000 seats for the 2025/26 season.
