History

About Estádio do Marítimo

Football has been played at Barreiros since 1927, when Nacional opened the Campo dos Barreiros; after Nacional’s financial troubles the land passed to the local authority in 1939. A new municipal stadium designed by António Couto Martins was officially opened on 5 May 1957 in front of 12,000 spectators, and for decades it was shared by Marítimo, Nacional and União. The ground was renamed after Marcelo Caetano in 1969, but the name did not last and it reverted to Estádio dos Barreiros. Marítimo took ownership in 2009 and rebuilt it in phases from July 2009 to a design by Pedro Araújo, at a cost of €46.5 million of which the regional government paid €31.5 million; the new main stand was opened on 2 December 2016 at a 2–1 win over Benfica, completing the 10,600 capacity.
