History

About Estádio da Madeira

For most of their history Nacional shared the municipal Estádio dos Barreiros with Marítimo and União. Under president Rui Alves the club announced a new stadium in the Choupana area, high above Funchal, in 1997, and building began the following year. On 13 February 1999 the ground, then a single 2,500-seat stand named Estádio Eng.º Rui Alves, staged its first official match, a 3–0 win over Amora. It was renamed Estádio da Madeira on 1 June 2007, and a new, fully covered west stand opened for the home match against Benfica on 2 September 2007, raising capacity to 5,200; the enlarged sports complex was inaugurated on 16 November 2007.

Two stands run the full length of the pitch, and there are high fences at both ends rather than stands.

  The east stand, built in the first phase together with the pitch.

• Bancada Poente

  The fully covered west stand opened in 2007, with the presidential stand, VIP area, boxes and press stand.
