History
About Estádio da Luz
The current Estádio da Luz opened on 25 October 2003, when Benfica beat Nacional of Uruguay 2–1, and replaced the original stadium of the same name used from 1954. 'Luz' comes from the surrounding neighbourhood and the old Estrada da Luz, not from the word for light. It hosted the Euro 2004 final, which Greece won 1–0 against Portugal on 4 July 2004, and the Champions League finals of 2014 and 2020. In July 2025 Benfica added 2,700 seats, taking capacity to 68,100.
