History

About Estádio D. Afonso Henriques

The ground opened as the Estádio Municipal de Guimarães on 3 January 1965, before building work was finished, with Vitória beating Os Belenenses 2–1 in the first division. The city council sold the stadium to Vitória under a deed signed on 21 September 1990, and the north stand and part of the east stand were rebuilt for the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship. In 1995 club members voted to name it after Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal and a native of Guimarães. It was rebuilt between March 2002 and July 2003 for Euro 2004 to a design by local architect Eduardo Guimarães, with the city council paying about €34 million, and reopened on 25 July 2003 with a 4–1 win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
