History

About Estádio Cidade de Barcelos

Gil Vicente played for about 70 years at the Estádio Adelino Ribeiro Novo, which no longer met the needs of professional football. The municipality of Barcelos built a new sports complex in the parish of Vila Boa, north of the city, at a cost of about €22 million including the land and outside works. The stadium was opened on 30 May 2004 with a friendly that Gil Vicente lost 2–1 to Nacional of Montevideo in front of 4,984 people, and the council held a second opening with a Julio Iglesias concert on 2 July 2004. It opened with 12,504 places, later reduced to 12,046 for safety and comfort.

  The west stand, in two tiers (1,587 upper and 1,818 lower seats), next to the presidential box and VIP boxes.

• Bancada Nascente

  The east stand, with 2,448 seats; the covered P1 car park is entered from this side.

• Bancada Norte

  The north end, with 1,935 seats.

• Bancada Sul

  The south end, in two tiers (2,127 upper and 1,836 lower seats); the team buses have their own garage under it.
