History

About Arena Națională

The arena was built on the site of the 1953 National Stadium, which was demolished between December 2007 and February 2008, partly on the old ground’s earth banks. Max Bögl and Astaldi built it to a design by Gerkan, Marg and Partners at a cost of about €234 million, shared between the city and the Romanian government. It opened on 6 September 2011 with a 0–0 draw between Romania and France in a Euro 2012 qualifier in front of 49,137 people. It staged the 2012 Europa League final and four matches at Euro 2020, and UEFA has chosen it for the 2028 Europa League final.
