The ground. Stamford Bridge opened in 1877 and is one of England's oldest grounds, with a capacity of roughly 40,340 — compact by modern standards and hemmed in by West London streets, which gives it a tight, loud atmosphere. The Shed End behind the south goal is the traditional home of the club's most vocal support; the Matthew Harding Stand runs the length of the east side. Every seat sits close to the pitch.
