History

About Volkswagen Arena

The Volkswagen Arena opened on 13 December 2002, replacing the older VfL Stadion am Elsterweg as VfL Wolfsburg's home ground. The 30,000-capacity stadium was designed by Düsseldorf-based HPP Architects and was built on land adjacent to the Volkswagen global headquarters and the Autostadt theme park, reflecting the club's longstanding ownership and financial backing by Volkswagen AG. The first competitive fixture, against Hertha BSC, finished 2-2. The smaller AOK Stadion next door (capacity 5,200) opened in 2015 as the dedicated home of the VfL Wolfsburg women's team, who are among the most successful clubs in European women's football; the largest UEFA Women's Champions League ties are sometimes moved to the Volkswagen Arena itself.

Seating layout

Volkswagen Arena seating plan & capacity

The Volkswagen Arena is a compact, complete bowl with no major gaps at the corners. The Nordkurve is the loudest section and is configured as standing terrace for Bundesliga fixtures (per German top-flight regulations, capacity drops for all-seated UEFA matches). The Osttribüne lower midfield offers the best sight-lines.

  • Nordkurve (North Stand)

Behind the north goal — the spiritual home of VfL Wolfsburg's most vocal support and the headquarters of the various Wolfsburg fan groupings. The largest singing section at the ground.

  • Südkurve (South Stand)

Behind the south goal. Houses the away allocation in a corner section for Bundesliga and European fixtures.

  • Osttribüne (East Stand)

Side stand along the touchline, two tiers. Houses the directors' box, the players' tunnel and the main press tribune.

  • Westtribüne (West Stand)

Side stand opposite the East, two tiers. Includes the main hospitality areas and the VIP boxes.
