History

About Stade de Luxembourg

The design was chosen in 2014 from 25 entries, and the city council approved the plans unanimously in December 2016. Building began in August 2017, but delays and the Covid-19 pandemic pushed completion from 2019 to July 2021, and the cost rose from about €61 million to about €80 million. The first official match was a 2–1 win over Azerbaijan in a World Cup qualifier on 1 September 2021, and the stadium was formally inaugurated on 25 September 2021 in the presence of the Grand Duke. It replaced the Stade Josy Barthel.
