History

About RheinEnergieStadion

The Müngersdorfer Stadion opened on 16 September 1923 as part of the Sportpark Müngersdorf, at the time Germany’s largest sports facility. A new 61,000-capacity stadium replaced it in 1975 and staged matches at Euro 1988. Between December 2001 and January 2004 it was rebuilt again as a football-only ground without an athletics track, at a cost of about €117.5 million, and renamed RheinEnergieStadion under a naming deal with the local energy company. It hosted matches at the 2005 Confederations Cup, the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2024, and the 2020 Europa League final.
