History

About Red Bull Arena

The arena was built between December 2000 and March 2004 inside the grassed embankment of the old Zentralstadion, a 100,000-capacity ground opened in 1956, whose main building was kept. It was a World Cup 2006 venue and was officially reopened in July 2004; its first international match, Germany 3–0 Cameroon, was played on 17 November 2004. The stadium took the name Red Bull Arena on 1 July 2010 after Michael Kölmel sold the naming rights to Red Bull for 30 years. Red Bull announced in December 2016 that it would buy the stadium, and work from 2019 added standing places, taking the capacity to 47,069 in 2021 and 47,800 in 2024.
