History

About Olympiastadion Berlin

Werner March designed the stadium for the 1936 Summer Olympics on the site of the earlier Deutsches Stadion, with the lower half sunk 12 metres below ground, and it opened on 1 August 1936. After the Second World War the surrounding Reichssportfeld became the headquarters of the British forces in Berlin. The stadium was partly roofed for the 1974 World Cup. It was rebuilt between 2000 and 2004 by gmp for the 2006 World Cup, keeping about 70 per cent of the historic structure and adding a roof over every seat. It has hosted the 2006 World Cup final, the 2015 Champions League final and the Euro 2024 final.

Seating layout

Olympiastadion Berlin seating plan & capacity

Every seat is covered, with 37,483 in the lower tier and 36,296 in the upper tier. A blue eight-lane athletics track runs around the hybrid-grass pitch, so the stands are further from play than at a football-only ground.

  • Ostkurve

The east curve, the home end of Hertha BSC’s supporters.

  • Marathontor

The Marathon Gate at the west end, where the upper and lower rings are broken; a temporary stand is built over it for the DFB-Pokal final.
