History

About Laugardalsvöllur

A town council committee set up in 1943 proposed a football stadium in Laugardalur, and the field was built between 1949 and 1952, with a 4,000-capacity stand started in 1953. Iceland played Norway there in 1957, two years before the official opening on 17 June 1959. Floodlights arrived in 1992, a second stand of 3,500 seats was built on the opposite side in 1997, and the older west stand was rebuilt and enlarged between 2005 and 2007. Work in 2024–25 laid a heated hybrid-grass pitch, moved the pitch west towards the main stand and removed the running track.
