History

About BayArena

The ground opened on 2 August 1958 as the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion, named after Bayer's first general director after the Second World War, with a match against Fortuna Düsseldorf. It was rebuilt stand by stand from 1986, when the East Stand was replaced, until the South Stand opened in 1997 and completed an all-seated ring of 22,500. It was renamed BayArena in 1998. Work starting in December 2007 added upper tiers on three sides and a roof over every seat, raising capacity to about 30,000; the stadium reopened on 15 August 2009 against TSG Hoffenheim.

  • North Stand

Built in 1989 and given an upper tier in the 2007–2009 expansion.

  • South Stand

Opened in 1997, completing the ring of stands around the pitch.
