History
About Astana Arena
The stadium was built between 2006 and 2009 at a cost of about US$185 million, designed by Populous with Tabanlıoğlu Architects and built by Sembol Construction. It opened on 3 July 2009 with a match between Lokomotiv Astana and Kazakhstan’s youth side, refereed by Pierluigi Collina, and was first called Kazhymukan Stadium after the wrestler Kazhymukan Munaitpasov before taking its current name. The first official international was a 2010 World Cup qualifier on 14 October 2009, which Croatia won 2–1. It staged the opening ceremony of the 2011 Asian Winter Games, and in February 2020 glass roof panels gave way under snow and ice without injuring anyone.
