Lyon — France's third-largest city with around 520,000 residents in the city proper and 2.3 million across the metropolitan area — sits at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers and ranks as the country's busiest events hub outside Paris. Olympique Lyonnais's Groupama Stadium (59,186), opened in 2016 in the eastern Décines-Charpieu suburb, is one of France's three UEFA Category Four stadiums and hosts the men's and women's first teams plus regular France national-team fixtures and Top 14 rugby finals. The Groupama Stadium staged matches at Euro 2016 and the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, including the latter's final. Lyon's Olympique Lyonnais Féminin women's side is the most decorated in European football with eight Champions League titles. Beyond football, the LDLC Arena (16,000) hosts ATP and concert tours, while Halle Tony Garnier (17,000) and Le Transbordeur (1,800) cover the indoor music calendar. Olympique Lyonnais play at the Groupama Stadium (also known as the Parc OL or, locally, the Stade des Lumières) in the eastern suburb of Décines-Charpieu — capacity 59,186, opened in 2016 for the 2016 European Championship. The ground replaced the older Stade de Gerland and is reached by the T3 tram from Lyon Part-Dieu station, journey time around 25 minutes. The stadium hosted seven Euro 2016 matches plus the 2018 Europa League final and the 2019 Women's World Cup final.
Lyon's biggest historical fixture is Le Choc des Olympiques against Olympique de Marseille — a clash of identity between the bourgeois, gastronomic east and the working-class, Mediterranean south. The local derby against AS Saint-Étienne (Le Derby Rhônalpin) is also one of the fiercest in French football when both clubs are in the same division. OL Féminin — the women's side — has won the UEFA Women's Champions League eight times, more than any other club, with multiple finals played at the Groupama Stadium itself.
Beyond football, Lyon hosts the Nuits de Fourvière summer festival (June-July) at the 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre on Fourvière hill, the Fête des Lumières across four nights every December (a city-wide light festival drawing two-to-three million visitors), and regular ATP and concert events at the LDLC Arena adjacent to the Groupama Stadium.
