Football in Amsterdam
Amsterdam — capital of the Netherlands with around 920,000 residents on the Amstel river and across the IJ inlet — is the spiritual home of total football and one of the most influential cities in the modern game's tactical history. AFC Ajax, founded in 1900, play at the 54,990-capacity Johan Cruyff Arena (formerly the Amsterdam ArenA, renamed in 2018 in tribute to the club's most famous son) in the Bijlmer district to the south-east of the centre. The ground opened in 1996 with one of the first fully retractable roofs in European football and hosted matches at Euro 2000 and Euro 2020, alongside hosting the Europa League final in 2013. Ajax have won thirty-six Eredivisie titles and four European Cup / Champions League trophies (1971, 1972, 1973, 1995). De Klassieker against Feyenoord is one of the most charged fixtures in the Dutch calendar. Beyond football, the Ziggo Dome (17,000) hosts most of the city's biggest indoor concert tours, the AFAS Live (5,500) covers club acts, and the Dance Valley and Awakenings festivals each summer cement Amsterdam as Europe's electronic music capital. Schiphol Airport sits fifteen minutes from Centraal Station by direct train.
