The English first division has existed since 1888. The Premier League is the rebranded breakaway competition founded in February 1992 when 22 top-flight clubs separated from the Football League to negotiate their own television rights, the first Premier League season was 1992-93.

The Premier League's first goal was scored by Brian Deane
Sheffield United's Brian Deane scored the first ever Premier League goal at 3:05pm on 15 August 1992, in a 2-1 home win over Manchester United at Bramall Lane. Deane scored the second goal of the match too.

The Premier League shrank from 22 clubs to 20 in 1995
The original Premier League featured 22 clubs but was reduced to 20 from the 1995-96 season onwards. The reduction was made to give players more rest and reduce fixture congestion. The current 20-club format has remained unchanged since.

Manchester United have won the most Premier League titles (13)

The current Premier League domestic TV rights cycle (2025-2029) is worth £6.7 billion to UK broadcasters. International rights for the same cycle add another £5+ billion. The combined £10+ billion deal is by some distance the largest in any domestic football league globally.

Players from more than 110 countries have appeared in the Premier League since 1992. The competition is the most diverse top-tier football league globally. Every UEFA member country has had at least one Premier League player, alongside players from across Africa, the Americas, and Asia.

The all-time Premier League top scorer is Alan Shearer (260 goals)
Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers striker Alan Shearer scored 260 Premier League goals between 1992 and 2006. Wayne Rooney (208), Andy Cole (187), Sergio Agüero (184) and Frank Lampard (177) are the next four on the all-time list.

The most goals scored in a Premier League match is 14
Arsenal 14-0 Doncaster Rovers in the 1992-93 season remains the highest-scoring fixture in Premier League history (a Cup tie reclassified as a Premier League fixture for record purposes). The highest-scoring league match is Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town (1995) and Leicester 9-0 Southampton (2019).

Three clubs have been ever-present in the Premier League
Only six clubs have been ever-present in the Premier League since 1992: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, and (until their 2024 relegation) Aston Villa. Everton's relegation in 2024 reduced the ever-present list. The current ever-present clubs are now five.

Up to seven English clubs can qualify for European competitions in a single season
From 2024-25 onwards, England can place up to five clubs in the Champions League (top four plus a UEFA coefficient bonus place), one in the Europa League, and one in the Conference League play-off. Meaning seven Premier League clubs can play European football in the same season.
