- The stadium is named after Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, the ruler of Johor.
- The design was inspired by the banana leaf, and red, blue and white lights in the colours of the Johor flag light the exterior.

History
About Sultan Ibrahim Stadium
Ground was broken on 30 January 2016 and the stadium opened on 22 February 2020. It cost about MYR 200 million, funded by the Sultan of Johor, and was built by Shanghai Baoye Group to a design by Saadon Architect and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design. Completion was first expected in 2018 but slipped after Tunku Ismail changed the location and parts of the design. It replaced the Larkin Stadium, which had housed Johor’s football teams since 1964.
