Format — pre-determined bracket
Quarter-final pairings are locked at the start of the knockout phase, following the league-phase finish. The four quarter-final pairings are: round-of-16 winner A vs round-of-16 winner B (with the seeded club's second leg at home), and likewise for the other three pairings. There is no new draw between the round of 16 and quarter-finals — the bracket is published in February and runs through to the final without further randomisation.
What's at stake
Winners advance to the semi-finals in late April / early May. Losers exit European competition for the season. The semi-final pairings, again pre-determined, see quarter-final winner A face quarter-final winner C; quarter-final winner B faces quarter-final winner D — with the higher league-phase seed retaining home advantage in the second leg through the knockout rounds.
