## How the new first knockout round works

The Round of 32 exists because the World Cup now begins with 48 teams. It is a full knockout round: there is no second leg and no aggregate score to repair a poor night.

1. The 24 group winners and runners-up qualify for the knockout phase.
2. They are joined by the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups.
3. Sixteen bracket matchups are determined by finishing positions and the official tournament bracket.
4. A level match after regulation proceeds under FIFA’s knockout rules, with extra time and penalties if required.
